Week 6 | Day 3 PETER’S CONFESSION Matthew 16:13-28 | Mark 8:27-9:1 | Luke 9:18-27

In the shadow of Caesarea Philippi—an area saturated with Roman gods and known as the “gates of Hades”—Jesus asked His disciples two penetrating questions: Who do the crowds say that I am? and Who do you say that I am? Peter answered rightly, declaring Jesus to be the Messiah. Yet Jesus immediately moved beyond confession to cost. He made it clear that the kingdom He was building was founded not on Peter, but on Himself, and that following Him would require more than correct theology—it would require complete and total surrender. He further explained that to belong to Him meant denying self, taking up the cross daily, and following Him, even when that path might wind through suffering rather than success.

APPLICATION

1. Right answers about Jesus must lead to right allegiance to Jesus. Confession without surrender is incomplete faith

2. Following Christ requires giving up self-rule, grabbing hold of the cross daily, and getting up to walk in obedience

3. Discipleship means placing Christ’s mission above personal ambition, comfort, or control

4. Every day presents a choice: live for self and gain the world temporarily, or live for Christ and gain life eternally

5. True life is found not in self-preservation, but in joyful abandonment to Jesus, our cornerstone and King.

Prayer

Lord Jesus, You are the Messiah, the foundation and cornerstone of my faith. Yet I confess how often I want Your salvation without Your lordship. Today, I choose once again to deny myself, to take up my cross, and to follow You. Help me release my grip on control and trust that Your will is better than mine. Decrease me so that You may increase in my life. I place You on the throne of my heart once more. Amen.
